Addiction Recovery Advice: Getting Clean as a Recovery Mom

Hello Port 45 Recovery Family and Friends!

With Mother’s Day being this past weekend, I thought that I would share a little about my spiritual awakening and how it relates to motherhood. I lost my mother to cancer only five days after I completed treatment in 2011. I found solace in knowing that my mother was able to see me getting clean.

This was a hard-won gratitude, but I was grateful. But the complexities of can sometimes be painful. In the end, knowing what we had lost helps us appreciate what we have in our life.

Little did I know that the thing that I had said would take me back out would be the thing that saved my life. The entire time I was in treatment, I knew that my mother was nearing the end of her life. My mother was bed-ridden and the cancer had spread to her brain. I would take passes to see her and she watched as with each visit I was coming back to life. I felt guilty that I was not there, but I was exactly where I was supposed to be and needed to be.

My mother passed away on December 9, 2011 and at the same time I discovered that I was pregnant with my second child. I had my spiritual awakening in knowing that I was being given a second chance to be a mother and that this child would never know an addict mom. I stayed clean and gave birth to that child on July 12, 2012 just 6 days after my 1 year of getting clean.

My mother Phyllis was there with me in spirit that day to see Jaxon Phyllip be born clean. My recovery baby will be 9 years old this year and now 2 out of 3 of my children have never known me as an actively using mother which is the best gift that I could give to my mother. I am blessed today to be a recovery Mom to Sammy, Jaxon and Reagan. I hope you all had a Happy Mother’s Day!
