Hello Port 45 Family and Friends,
As we close out May with Memorial Day, I have begun to reflect on those we have lost to addiction. I lost my cousin Danielle to this disease last week and amid those feelings, I became overwhelmed with gratitude. We have lost many lives to this disease, but I have also watched many live. I am surrounded every day by some incredibly strong men and women that have built incredible lives in recovery.
One of my favorite quotes is by JK Rowling which says, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation upon which I built my life.” It is not rebuilding a life because most of us started using at a young age and had never built a solid foundation to start with. We have overcome so much to arrive at where we are today.
My dear friend and coworker received her Masters’ degree recently, 8 years ago she was a convicted felon with a prison number and today she is one of the smartest, successful, and compassionate treatment professionals that I know. She is just one example of how far we can come in recovery.
At 10 years clean I have gone from homeless to homeowner, from drug addict to college graduate, from absent mother to good mother and criminal to productive member of society. I truly believe that the sky is the limit for those of us in recovery. We are creative, hardworking, and determined. We can achieve in a small amount of time what some people work their entire lives to achieve. We do it by living one day at a time.
