Hello Port 45 Friends and family!
I am a few days late with my Blog this week which is a direct result of the weather! Summer is upon us and with that comes an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine. The winter months are difficult for me as I suffer from seasonal depression otherwise known as seasonal affective disorder.
Many people go through short periods of time where they feel sad or not like their usual selves. Sometimes, these mood changes begin and end when the seasons change. People may start to feel “down” when the days get shorter in the fall and winter (also called “winter blues”) and begin to feel better in the spring, with longer daylight hours.
Research shows that low levels of Vitamin D can lead to depression and our main source of Vitamin D is through sunshine. Getting outside and being active also helps to reduce stress. Being active prompts your body to release Endorphins which elevates moods.
In recovery it is important that we address all aspects of health; mental, physical, and emotional. So going outside to “play” is a great way to support a recovery lifestyle. We here at Port 45 in Portsmouth had a kickball game yesterday, staff versus clients. It was so nice to be outside, bonding with each other, enjoying the weather and laughing.
Summer’s official start is June 20th so get out there and live life! Go on vacation, go fishing, sunbathe, go swimming, ride a bike, or just have fun! It is important for your recovery!
