Hello Port 45 Family and Friends!
What I have discovered from doing this blog every other week is that the subject matter appears to manifest itself naturally from week to week. I sit down each Friday and reflect on significant experiences that I have had from week to week and relate those experiences to addiction and recovery topics.
This week I have an amazing experience that reminded me of a coping skill that can be used for many emotions and feelings in recovery. This week I am going to talk about the healing properties (and sometimes triggers) of music.
Music can change your mood. Music can be a form of meditation. Music can bring back memories. I believe that music is a great outlet for feelings. Music can also help me to clear my mind and get out of negative thoughts. It can be used as a coping skill for racing thoughts or as a form of meditation. Everyone is going to have a different experience with the types of music that will work for them to promote positive feelings. My suggestion is just to be aware of your feelings and identify those feelings often.
When I am listening to music that promotes drug use or is degrading it has the potential to trigger me. Some music can bring back uncomfortable feelings that I have not yet learned to cope with. As a recovering addict, I must be able to identify my feelings and where they are coming from on a regular basis. If the music I am listening to in the car every day is affecting my mood in a negative manner I must change that channel.
The experience that I had that prompted the blog today was my birthday present. A friend of mine was able to arrange a video call from the lead singer of my favorite band. Without disclosing who it was I will say this band had 3 Billboard Number One hits and 8 songs that reach the top 10.
This was a rare and very exciting call for me. This artist is also in recovery and I was able to tell him how his music has inspired me as a recovering addict. I was grateful for this once in a lifetime experience and I share it so that maybe you too can find some motivation and inspiration in music.
